VLE Management & Development
I’ve worked with Moodle since around 2017 — initially as a teacher, handling daily tasks like uploading materials and structuring content for learners and then taking on a more advanced role as Moodle administrator at the Sino-British College, an institution with around 2,000 students.
In this role, I’ve provided helpdesk support for staff across multiple departments, resolving issues related to enrolments, gradebooks, course access, and completion tracking. I’ve also developed internal documentation to reduce duplication and improve support processes.
In addition to this day-to-day work, I’ve delivered a number of higher-level projects to improve reporting and institutional oversight.
Dashboard Reporting for Managers
Class attendance was tracked through the institution’s VLE, but data could only be viewed at the level of individual students or classes. There was no easy way to view trends by module, school, or cohort. I created custom SQL reports using the Configurable Reports plugin and added them to the Moodle dashboard, giving Heads of School, the Academic Co-ordinator, and the Executive Dean direct access to live attendance summaries. This involved researching Moodle’s database structure in detail to identify the relevant tables and joins.

College-wide Feedback Surveys
To support regular, structured feedback from students across the college, I led the rollout of a centralised survey system. Surveys were developed by myself and other senior members of staff. Moodle’s built-in tools lacked the flexibility we needed — especially around conditional logic and question branching — so I installed and configured the Questionnaire plugin. This gave staff the ability to design more sophisticated surveys aligned with their academic goals. I trained academic and admin staff in creating, deploying, and managing surveys. I also wrote a user guide to support independent use and ran sessions on how to export and interpret the results, helping departments incorporate student feedback into practical decisions.

Engagement Tracking with Custom Scales
Following a request from the Executive
Dean to measure student engagement via
Moodle, I set up a solution using the
existing gradebook. Lecturers recorded
engagement scores fortnightly with a
predefined scale, first trialled in the
summer EAP programme before rolling out
college-wide.
I provided documentation, training, and
support for staff. The engagement data
challenged assumptions about poor results,
giving Student Management and the
Academic Coordinator actionable insights.
Reports were regularly reviewed in
management meetings.
Quiz Implementation for Learning Outcomes
I implemented Moodle quizzes to assess student performance across three clearly defined areas: content, application, and conceptual understanding. Quiz questions were tagged according to these areas, and I provided training and documentation to support lecturers in quiz creation. The quizzes significantly improved teaching consistency within the EAP programme by clearly defining student expectations and outcomes.
